Accurate infectious titer measurement is critical
Many experimental procedures in virology or immunology depend either on quantitation of the interaction between virus and host, or control of the interaction. Examples include development of passive immunotherapeutics, cloning a gene using a viral vector, or studying the effects of gene knock down using viruses as control elements. In these and many other cases, inaccurate determination of infectious viral titer can lead to highly erroneous results.
Reverse Transcriptase (RT) is the best proven method
Over the years, a number of methods have been developed to measure infectious viral titer. Some are relatively inaccurate, but easy to do. Others are very accurate, but time consuming and resource intensive. Among the available methods, the determination of Reverse Transcriptase activity has emerged as the single method that is fast, easy and accurate.
